The Financial Regulator has overall responsibility for the regulation and supervision of Credit Institutions authorised in Ireland. The objectives in supervising Credit Institutions are:
- to foster a stable banking system
- to provide a degree of protection to depositors with individual credit institutions
Credit Institutions regulated by the Financial Regulator include:
- Banks
- Building Societies
- Designated Credit Institutions
In addition, the Financial Regulator has a number of specific new responsibilities, which it must carry out under the Government Guarantee Scheme.
